A study on factors influencing on mental health literacy using Andersen and Newman¡¯s Model£ºA comparison between older adults and other age groups

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to explore variables included in three different components of Andersen and Newman`s model influencing on mental health literacy by age groups, and to suggest effective and age appropriate counterplans to improve mental health literacy. With those purposes, a survey was conducted on 1,000 people who were over 20 years old. Major results of this study are as follows. There were specific differences in mental health literacy level among age groups, people aged over 65 had lowest mental health literacy level comparing with other age groups. In all three age groups, social support and health literacy appeared as an important variables included in enabling components to predict mental health literacy. Meanwhile, it represented that perceived economic status was related to mental health literacy only for people over 65 years old. With the results mentioned above, the current study suggested the ways to enhance social support and health literacy for increasing mental health literacy level, and presented suggestions to improve perceived social economic status for people aged over 65 years for enhanced mental health literacy level.
